Volunteers are not paid;

 Not because they are worthless,

 But because they are PRICELESS

Measures taken to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus have significantly impacted our normal operations. In order to continue to provide shelter to people experiencing a housing crisis during the outbreak, PADS has changed some of its basic operating procedures in order to account for the safety of the people we serve as well as our staff and volunteers. We are striving to maintain the same level of service as we have in the past. In order to do this, we have made the following adjustments:

  1. Until April 7, PADS will operate a 24/7 shelter site in a Warren Township government building. Access to this shelter is only available by individuals assessed at our building at 1800 Grand Ave. in Waukegan. Walk-ins are not permitted at this site.

  2. PADS is providing hotel stays to clients not otherwise receiving shelter in the Township building. Access to these rooms is available to individuals assessed at 1800 Grand. Clients will participate in our normal intake procedure and are subject to PADS program standards. Clients coming from outside of Lake County will not be eligible for shelter even if they have spent time in Lake County previously.

  3. Intake will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Should someone require outreach in the community, please have them call our facility at 847-689-4357.

  4. All clients receive a health screening daily including a temperature check. Clients in ill health will be referred to healthcare professionals. PADS will do what it can to support these individuals.

  5. PADS can not accommodate police drop-offs with this new arrangement. Clients will have to be assessed during the intake hours noted above.

Other Opportunities

Volunteering at PADS is an excellent way to get involved in your community and make a positive impact in the lives of others. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering, or if you knowexactly how you want to volunteer, please fill out the volunteer form to the left.

There are a number of ways you may give the gift of your time and compassion.  Here are just a few examples...

Volunteer at a PADS Shelter Site (October 1 – April 30)

*Depending on the site policies, some of these tasks may only be performed by individuals 18+. Each site provides its own orientation and training.

Each site operates a little bit differently, but there are a number of opportunities here.  From making up pads on the floor to cleaning up in the morning; from signing people into the shelter to simply being a kind person to talk to.

Volunteer to Make, Bring, or Serve Meals

PADS is always in need of volunteers to make, bring, or serve meals. Whether you are making bag lunches for our Day Center or bringing and serving a hot meal to our Family Center families, your generosity is truly appreciated.

Volunteer your Talent

Maybe you are a certified tax professional.  Or maybe you are handy with at landscaping.  Perhaps you have superb writing skills.  Or it is possible that you are qualified to tutor someone to get their GED.  Whatever unique talents you may have, consider how they might be used to help PADS or the people we serve here.

Important note: Many of our shelter site volunteer spots are already full.  You may still fill out the form, but opportunities may not be available at your preferred time.
